Welcome to Syracuse
Upstate University is tucked between the downtown area and Syracuse University. It is surrounded by excellent neighborhoods and schools. There are options to live walking distance from the hospital/ EMStat; otherwise, commutes from the surrounding suburbs are typically around 10-15 minutes. Fellows choose to either buy a house or rent an apartment depending on their family situation.
Live
Syracuse has no shortage of places to eat. Explore the city’s and suburbs’ various restaurants and bars or head out to the Finger Lakes to experience the area’s amazing breweries, famous wineries, and even local cheesemakers. We are home to the original Dinosaur BBQ!
Eat
Central New York is a vacation destination famous for its lakes and countryside. There are plenty of hiking and biking trails in the immediate Syracuse area as well as further out in the Finger Lakes region. Downtown hosts a large indoor climbing gym, a robust children’s museum, and multiple festivals over the summer (almost every weekend in downtown). The New York State Fair is in Syracuse every year!
Play
Syracuse is home to the NYS Fair every August. There is free concerts, food and tons of activities. It is very family friendly and the whole city comes together to have a good time. Our EM residents also work at the NYS Fair medical tents and you can also volunteer if you would like!
