Fellowship at Upstate

Clinician

A typical PEM block will consist of 15 eight-hour shifts in the Pediatric Emergency Department. Shifts are either 8-4a or 4-12p. Mornings are typically covered by a single attending, with a second being added at either noon or 4p.

We tailor the experience to each individual fellow, but most begin staffing patients from the residents in the first month after a few ‘warm-up’ shifts. The expectation of the fellow is that they do whatever best facilitates their education. That may mean taking supervising every patient who comes in to develop department management skills, or allowing the Attending to supervise while you step give a critically ill patient your full attention. While on shift you’ll help educate the residents with formal teaching, procedural supervision as well as providing feedback and oversight for their plans. You will always have first priority for any procedure you wish to practice. You will always have first priority for airway emergencies and intubations. You will always have priority to be trauma team leader.

Some of our fellow’s find additional experience moonlighting at Golsiano After Hours, a hospital based urgent care with access to consultants, advanced imaging and beside ultrasound.
